Rename Fields

You can assign an alternate name for a field that displays in the Data pane as well as in the view. For instance, a field called Customer Segment in the data source could be aliased to appear as Business Segment in Tableau. You can rename both dimensions and measures. Renaming a field does not change the name of the field in the underlying data source, rather it is given a special name that appears only in Tableau workbooks. The changed field name is saved with the workbook as well as when you export the data source.

Renaming a Field

  1. Right-click (control-click on a Mac) the field name in the Data pane that you want to rename and select Rename.
  2. Enter the new name in the subsequent dialog box and click OK.

The field displays with the new name in the Data pane.

Reverting to the Default Field Name

  1. Right-click (control-click on a Mac) the field and select Rename.
  2. In the Rename dialog box, click Reset and then click OK.
