Upgrade Tableau Server in a Non-Default Location

Tableau Server on Windows now includes Tableau Services Manager (TSM), which replaces the Configuration Utility and the tabadmin command line tool. If you need help for an earlier version of Tableau Server, see the Tableau Help page.

Note: This topic applies to upgrades from version 2018.1 or earlier. When upgrading from 2018.2.x to a later version, you are not prompted for install location.

When you upgrade from version 2018.1 or earlier, you need to install the new version of Tableau Server to the same location as your existing Tableau Server. This allows the Setup program to locate and upgrade your existing configuration and data.

The install location for Tableau Server depends on where Tableau is installed:

  • Default location:

By default, the Tableau Server 2018.1 and earlier is installed here:

    C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\<version>

and stores data and logs here:

    C:\ProgramData\Tableau\Tableau Server

  • Non-default location:

If you installed Tableau Server 2018.1 or earlier to a non-default location, the location follows this pattern:

    <install_drive>:\<install\path>\<version>

and stores data and logs here:

    install_drive>:\<install\path>\

If your existing installation is in the default location, you can accept the defaults in the Setup program, and the install process will find your associated data and configuration settings during upgrade.

If your existing installation is not in the default location, you need to tell the Setup program where to install the new version of Tableau Server. How you specify a non-default upgrade location when prompted by the Setup program depends on whether you browse to the location or type the path:

  • If you browse to the install location, the Setup program takes that location and appends \Tableau Server to it, and then installs to files immediately below the \Tableau Server folder. You can see the path that Tableau Server will be installed to when you are browsing, and you can edit that path if it is not correct (if, for example, you want or need to include a \Tableau folder).
  • If you type the install location, the Setup program accepts the path you type and installs to folders immediately below that path.

For example, to upgrade an existing 10.5 installation of Tableau Server installed to D:\Tableau\Tableau Server\10.5, you can either

  • Browse to D:\Tableau (the Setup program will populate the path as D:\Tableau\Tableau Server)

    or

  • Type the path as D:\Tableau\Tableau Server
